Overnight Out Trips

Each year the Summer Camp holds an off-site adventure for scout campers. All campers must select one of the three options available. We will hold 3 overnight expeditions this year. Scout Campers are asked to register which option they would like to do from the choices below. Please note, some additional personal equipment may be necessary - please check the Equipment Checklist.

Overnight Trip #1 - Scale the Mountain

This trip involves an overnight hike to the summit of Mount Bald. As with previous years, the hikers will take the trails form Camp Woodlands, and switchback up steep slopes through the forest to the summit of Mount Bald. This trip involves easy walking, some hiking on narrow trails and a short scramble to reach the summit.

Once on the summit, the hikers set up camp in the open, sleeping under the stars on the crags at the top of the mountain. In previous years we have had clear skies and the opportunity to see shooting stars. After a night in the open, we often awake to a temperature inversion with the cloud hanging beneath us over the lake and nothing but mountain tops reaching out above.

This trip will test the strength and resourcefulness of the scout campers as we have to plan a meal for the evening, carry our own personal equipment, sleeping gear and backpacks and of course - water! Each camper must bring a bottle and enough water to last throughout the night and into the morning. In previous years we have been blessed with hot temperatures and clear skies, each camper has to carry at least 2 litres of water per person.

Overnight Trip #2 - Paddle the Seas!

Okay, so we're not on the sea exactly, but the overnight canoe paddle can often seem like it! The goal is to paddle up the lake to find safe refuge on one of the rocky and forested peninsulas that border the lake. This trip is for those Scout campers who love to be on the water, exploring new places and surviving in the wild!

The paddlers leave Camp Woodlands and head up the lake, often against the waves, which can get high enough to be exciting! We'll paddle towards the narrows in the lake, where there are several secluded camp spots to pitch for the night. You won't be taking tents, just building shelters in the forest and making use of trees and branches found scattered along the shoreline.

This trip will take all of your scouting experience, to select materials, lash together a temporary shelter and create somewhere to sleep for the night. After a campfire on the beach and an evening meal, you'll be sleeping in your shelters overnight. The following morning, be met with a sunrise over the lake and as the early morning mist burns off, prepare breakfast and strike camp. The paddle back to Camp Woodlands is usually on calm water or with the wind making it a relaxing trip home!

Overnight Trip #3 - Middle Earth

Calling all moles and hobbits! This year we have extended the caving activity into an overnight trip. We'll be leaving camp and setting up a sub-camp in the hills around Gordon River, where we will explore several caves. This trip will include some small and crawly caves for those who want to scrabble around, some larger walking caves where we will explore old stream passages and large chambers, and even have an opportunity to rappel into a cave! There is something for all levels of experience, from absolute beginners to youth that have visited several caves before.

We'll depart Camp Woodlands at lunchtime on Wednesday and drive a short distance to the caving area. After setting up our subcamp, we prepare for the caves and split into three groups to start our exploration. We'll return to our subcamp in the late evening for a warm meal before a campfire (weather permitting) and bed. We will have tents with us.

Youth will have the opportunity to discover new caves, climb, crawl and rappel while learning all about the cave systems we will visit.

Sorry the caving trip is now full.

Other Activities

This year we are planning on some extra evening activities - please indicate if you have a preference for any of the following activities by placing a check in the appropriate boxes. The activities below are all subject to confirmation once we can gauge numbers.

Advanced Archery

You will have had the opportunity to have a go at archery during the program activities. This is a step up again, having tuition from some of our scouter leaders who are very proficient at shooting arrows! Expect to be challenged and try a different selection of bows. This is an evening activity and will be run during camper free time.

Climbing and Rappeling

We will be running a climbing and rappelling wall at camp this year and it will be available to youth during their free time sessions.

Canoe Challenge

Think you're good in a canoe? Try out our canoe challenge! This is a short watercourse that will test your experience in canoes. We'll be challenging you to learn new strokes, handle a canoe by yourself and be able to turn tricks on the water! This activity is for experienced paddlers who want to do a bit more on the open water. Some getting wet may be required!
